Hall Staff
Anchor 1
When St. Anselm Hall was founded in 1907 by the Rev. Thomas Allworthy, he became it's first Warden, that is to say that he was the head of the hall and responsible for it's day to day running. After his depature in 1914, he was succeded in the role by a number of other vicars, all of whom were appointed by the Church of England as the hall's Warden between 1914 and 1951 (when the hall was sold to the University of Manchester.)
To support the Warden, there existed a senior staff team within the hall, including the Sub-Warden and the Tutor. While there is evidence that Allworthy appointed some Sub-Wardens and Tutors during his tenure, the scheme apparently fell away after his depature. When the Rev. Armytage arrived in hall in 1927, however, he made a number of changes designed to 'build a college tradition' within St. Anselm Hall. One of these was that he created the positions of Sub-Warden and Senior Tutor. These were roles given (generally) to academic members of the University staff who would 'live-in' (The sub-warden in Manor and the tutor in Summerfield), to support the Warden in his duties whilst also providing academic gravtis to the hall atmosphere.
