Memory Wall
On the memory wall, we invite those connected or formerly connected with Slems to submit their own memories of Slems through the decades.
Please note that memories may be edited for the purposes of presentation, data protection and conciseness. A seperate record of the information will be collected and stored for use as part of the Slems archive.
The Warden was ”Poor old Joe” (I no longer recall his name.)
Two fellow new students who always “invaded" my room when a parcel arrived (because they knew it contained a chocolate cake from my mother in Chester, were Gallagher and Bowe (both from Whitehaven) and “doing” Physics at Oxford Road under Prof PMS Blackett.
Older students were “President of JCR J C Pether; then outspoken Welshman “taffy” Rosser; from Gloucestershire Berkeley(?) (studying for a Building Diploma at the Manchester College of Technology; and from Turkey, nice person, Tanyloglou (spelling?)
Freshers Night at Oxford Road was memorable because on returning to my room very late I found I was locked out of my second floor room. I did not know it then but older students were inside my room. I then went outside and attempted to climb up the ivy and bushes to reach my open window and had buckets of water tipped on me! Such was life!
On other activity occasions the comorarderie (spelling?) with fish and chip suppers were wonderful. As was the [Rag] Day we spent in Oldham collecting funds because the pies provided by Oldham residents were outstanding.
Derrick K (Student 1945-46.)
